The Differences between Vaginoplasty and Labiaplasty and Which Procedure is Best for You
Vaginoplasty and Labiaplasty are two very different procedures. Both are considered plastic surgery yet focus on different parts of the vagina. Vaginoplasty is a procedure for the vaginal canal and mucous membrane. Often referred to as “vaginal rejuvenation”, “cosmetic vaginal surgery”, or “aesthetic vaginal surgery”, this procedure aims to strengthen the function of the vulvo-vaginal area and tighten and reshape tissue for a more youthful vagina. The procedure is essentially a “face lift” for the vulva and vagina. This procedure is usually done in the cases of those whose vaginas have become slack or loose due to childbirth, cancer, aging, or disease. After surgery, the patient is usually able to walk comfortably within a few days and may return to sexual activities within 4-6 weeks.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure on the labia minora, designed to improve or reduce the size and shape of the outer or inner labia. Patients who opt for this procedure usually seek it for aesthetic reasons (e.g. they don’t like the way their genitals look, or do not feel as though the labia are within normal size or shape). Patients also choose this procedure if they have a congenital defect that has affected their labia, or experience physical discomfort day-to-day or during intercourse. This procedure is not for those who have malignancies or any gynecological issues that can get in the way. Though the labia will be swollen after the procedure, the patient can usually go home the same day. The surgical area will require the proper amount of cleaning and application of ointment for about 2 days after the operation. In order for everything to heal properly, the patient is advised to not engage in sexual relations for a few weeks, avoid wearing tight clothes, and avoid strenuous physical activity for a few days.
If you are a smoker, you have to be willing to stop smoking temporarily or completely for the surgery to heal properly. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Major complications are rare, but minor complications that do not affect the outcome of labiaplasty occur occasionally.
