Ah, summer in San Diego. Time to bare more skin and hit the beaches, barbecues, and backyard pool parties. To keep your skin looking great through the summer and beyond, follow these essential skincare tips for summer.
Beauty Tips for Glowing Skin in Summer
Help to protect your skin this summer by following these beauty tips.
1. Always use sunscreen
Use sunscreen daily to protect your skin from the sun. Start with moisturizers containing an SPF of 30 or higher. Be sure to provide yourself with generous coverage, using at least 2 milligrams of sunscreen per centimeter of skin. Top that off with makeup containing broad spectrum SPF, but remember not to rely on the makeup alone. It’s effective as a supplement to sunscreen, not as a replacement.
2. Remember your lips and your scalp
Your lips get a lot of sun exposure. Treat them to a hydrating lip balm containing SPF to protect them and keep them looking young and pretty. Also, don’t forget your scalp. Apply a spray sunscreen to the part in your hair.
3. Wear a hat to the beach
A wide-brim hat will go a long way toward protecting the skin on your face and your scalp. This is a good habit whether you’re at the beach, at the pool, or enjoying an epic, all-day barbecue. A baseball cap will do in a pinch, but it doesn’t provide the coverage of a wide brim hat.
4. Splurge on sunglasses
Sunglasses aren’t just affordable accessories that can make you feel like a movie star. They also provide valuable protection for your eyes. UV exposure contributes to cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye problems. Look for sunglasses that are specifically designed for UV protection. They’ll be rated UV400 or higher. You don’t need to pay a million bucks for them, either.
5. Reapply your sunscreen
No matter how high the SPF on your sunscreen, it won’t last all day long. You should reapply it every two hours. But cream sunscreens are nearly impossible to reapply without messing up your foundation, blush, and whatever other makeup you put on before work this morning. Luckily, mineral powder sunscreen can be reapplied over the top of your makeup throughout the day. You may need to apply two coats, but that’s easier than starting all over from a naked face right in the middle of your workday.
6. Eat sun-fighting superfoods
Believe it or not, some foods can actually help reduce your risk of sun-damage. Foods that contain antioxidants provide long-term protection against the effects of UV-radiation. They protect and repair cells from photoaging. This summer, stock up on some of these delicious sun-fighting superfoods: tomatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, greens, melons, strawberries, kiwis, and oranges.
7. Treat and repair past sun-damage
If you’re heading into this summer with skin that bears evidence of old sun-damage, you might want to consider a treatment to improve the appearance of your skin. At San Diego Cosmetic Laser Clinic, we offer several different treatment options, including Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photorejuvenation, microdermabrasion, Fraxel (a non-invasive laser therapy), and more.
