Who Can Benefit From Vaginoplasty
There are several ways that vaginoplasty can be helpful for women.
- After childbirth: After a woman gives birth naturally, the muscles in her vagina can weaken. This can cause issues with sexual intercourse, incontinence problems and a general feeling of “looseness.” Vaginoplasty can strengthen the vagina walls and muscles and decrease the vaginal diameter.
- Vaginal defects: Every vagina is different. Some people do not like the appearance of their vagina, and others may have defects in their vagina. If this causes self-esteem issues for the woman, vaginoplasty can help. In other cases, a defect can be caused by a disease or trauma and may need to be repaired.

What is a vaginoplasty?
A vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves using a laser to remove excess lining and tissue inside the vagina and tightening the vaginal walls with strong sutures. The procedure decreases the internal and external diameters of the vagina and increases vaginal muscle tone. Together, these factors boost friction for increased sensation during sex. Vaginoplasty can also rejuvenate the anterior wall of the vagina to treat stress urinary incontinence – the involuntary loss of urine when exercising, sneezing, laughing, or coughing. The entire vaginoplasty procedure typically takes between one and two hours. Generally, a local anesthetic is used for the patient’s comfort.

What to Expect After Vaginoplasty?
Like any surgical procedure, vaginal rejuvenation comes with downtime. You may experience pain, swelling, and spotting for the first few days after the procedure. Icing the area regularly for the first 48 to 72 hours will help minimize these symptoms. When showering, carefully clean the vaginal area and dab it with a fresh towel until completely dry. Then apply antibiotic ointment to the external stitches.
Most women need two to three days of rest after a vaginoplasty. Depending on how physically demanding your job is, you may be able to return to work on the third day. If you are planning to undergo labiaplasty or hymenoplasty in addition to vaginal rejuvenation, plan to wait about a week before returning to work. Avoid strenuous exercise for three weeks, until the stitches have dissolved. Sitz baths can help speed up the healing process.
Vaginal rejuvenation results
The tightening results of your vaginoplasty will be complete six weeks after surgery. Four weeks after your vaginoplasty, it is recommended to use a small toy to open the vaginal canal. If this is comfortable, you can begin gentle sexual activity six weeks after surgery. The results of vaginal rejuvenation typically last a lifetime, unless you have another vaginal childbirth, which can reverse the effects. For this reason, we recommend waiting until after your last pregnancy to undergo vaginal rejuvenation.
