Microdermabrasion is a popular cosmetic procedure that has been around for quite a while. In fact, it dates back to 1500 BC. Today it is one of the top five aesthetic procedures performed in the United States.
What it does
Microdermabrasion exfoliates the skin. It gives the skin a fresh look by removing a superficial layer of dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion buffs and polishes the skin using a stream of fine crystals to slough off the dry skin cells.
Microdermabrasion works to tackle flaws at the surface level. It treats the outermost layer of skin using a hand-held device. It sends small crystals over the skin which are then suctioned up. Alternately, the treatment may be administered by a machine that uses a diamond-tipped wand. Both types of machines remove the surface layer of skin cells through exfoliation. Only the outermost level of skin, the dermis, is treated.
Who it benefits
The benefits of microdermabrasion are for those who want to achieve a “fresh” appearance without resorting to more invasive procedures like chemical peels or laser treatments.
If you have acne scars, fine lines, crepe-y skin, uneven pigmentation, blackheads or clogged pores, you can benefit from microdermabrasion treatments. It gives the skin a smooth, even look and helps to speed up the clearance of whiteheads.
Many dermatologists also recommend it for patients with melasma and those who use retinoids like Retin-A, because microdermabrasion can help alleviate uneven pigmentation.
Microdermabrasion is appropriate for cosmetic problems associated with aging skin, like age spots and sun damage. It also alleviates minor acne scarring.
You won’t see major results, though, if you have deep wrinkles or brown spots. In such cases, you may want to look to a different type of skin treatment, like a chemical peel, for best results.
How often you should get a microdermabrasion treatment
depends upon your skin care needs. Typically dermatologists recommend treatment packages of several sessions in order to see the most benefits. These sessions last about half an hour. Most people need several sessions to see best results; however, some people may see real results in as little as two sessions.
Typically, you will have a treatment every two weeks. After your initial package of sessions, maintenance treatments are suggested to keep your face looking great. Your skincare professional may recommend that you come back monthly for treatments.
If you have a big event coming up, though, just one treatment can be beneficial if you want your skin to appear healthy and refreshed.
Safe and Effective
Microdermabrasion treatments are not painful, although you may feel a little scratching or mild stinging sensations during your treatment. Or, you may simply feel a light vibration, much like a massage. There is no anesthesia involved.
With microdermabrasion, there is no downtime. Typically you will be a little pink after a treatment, for an hour or two, and your skin may be sensitive. A calming moisturizer will usually be applied, and you should make sure to wear sunscreen after a treatment if you will be outdoors.
These treatments are very safe. Seek out the services of a qualified medical professional in order to avoid any complications and to get optimal benefits out of your microdermabrasion sessions.
