Many people suffer from unwanted fat underneath the chin and, sometimes, even those who are not overweight may have what is commonly called a double chin. A 2014 survey showed that 68% of Americans say they are unhappy with the amount of fat visible beneath their chins, and only about half of those people considered themselves to be overweight.
Kybella Injection Treatment
Now there’s good news for those with double chins. A new procedure, in development since 2007, was recently approved in April of last year by the FDA and became available to dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons in June. It’s called Kybella, and it is a proprietary injection given under the chin in the fatty tissue.
Once injected, Kybella works to kill fat tissue which is then eliminated by the lymphatic system naturally. The procedure takes only about 15 to 20 minutes, and patients typically need to return once a month for six months for a repeat treatment in order to achieve permanent results. Not all patients need to undergo a full six months of treatment, but this is a determination that you can make along with the professionals at San Diego Cosmetic Laser Clinic.
Now that this groundbreaking treatment has been on the market long enough for many patients to have completed a full six-month treatment cycle, the results are in. Many patients report that they have been very satisfied with their results. Most claim that the fatty tissue beneath their jaw and chin has been gone since within one month after the initial treatment. Even those who say that they have gained weight since the procedure claim that none of the new body fat has found its way back beneath the chin.
Before Kybella became available there were only two options for people who wanted to get rid of unwanted double chins – a surgical neck lift, or laser liposuction. Both of these procedures subject the patient to significantly greater pain and discomfort as well as longer recovery times. What’s worse, these treatments are more invasive and come with greater risks.
The Kybella double chin treatment can be completed in the doctor’s office in just a few minutes and, in most cases, patients can go about their daily business immediately afterward.
The one downside, of Kybella, some doctors say, is that while the treatment does melt away the fatty tissue, it does not tighten the skin. The skin will naturally tighten over time, and there are other treatments that can help with that. If patients are able to wait, the natural tightening of the skin will have the best results, the least scarring, and it will add no discomfort to the process and is 100% safe.
In an FDA after market survey, 62% of Kybella patients responded and of them, 96% reported that they were satisfied with their results. A noticeable reduction in fat below the jaw was observed by clinicians in 100% of patients regardless of how the patient reported his or her results.
Of those surveyed, 81% experienced mild and temporary side effects such as discomfort, stiffness in the treated area, and slight difficulty in swallowing. Just 17.4% of respondents reported moderate side effects, and only 1.6% reported severe side effects.
